Nationwide’s x-ray screening

by Mark Rowe

Totalpost Services Plc has supplied a mail and parcel x-ray security screening device into one of Nationwide’s processing centres.

Supplied into the centre in Swindon, the machine has been used mainly for screening incoming mail as the centre receives around 20,000 items of mail a day.

Nationwide previously used a cabinet style security screener but have the Astrophysics XIS 6040 conveyor X-Ray machine from Totalpost to enable operators to see more clearly the contents of incoming mail. As it’s a conveyor style machine it has increased screening efficiency, the building society says.

Pictured is James Carter, Operations Team Manager at the Nationwide processing centre, with the XIS 6040 machine. James Carter aid: “The imagery of the screened items is far clearer than our previous machine, this gives staff peace of mind when dealing with large volumes of mail.”

The processers have also identified a secondary use for the x-ray screener and now use it for screening paperwork for metal, mainly staples before putting items through their scanning equipment. This is a process that was previously done by hand and enables them to increase the longevity of the scanning equipment.

David Hymers, Managing Director of Totalpost said: “We are seeing an increase in the use of x-ray security screening of incoming mail in corporate mailrooms. We provide a wide variety of cabinet and conveyor x-ray security screening equipment that is ideal for use in corporate settings.”
