My event round-up

by Mark Rowe

Last month and this saw a number of events so here is a quick round up of them if you missed them, writes Roy Cooper.

First, Honeywell held a series of half-day events which they called roadshows around the country. Their aim, to help the visitors, mainly installers, to move over to IP. It didn’t take up much time for those busy people out there. The company has a range of products and staff to help with the transition and they talked about using the cloud for storage for example. The company likewise has an app for download to assist you with the design and configuration.

Security Institute
The Security Institute annual conference at Marble Arch; well-attended, and by some key people, such as the chair of the Security Industry Authority Elizabeth France, and the Master of the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals Barry Stewart and Mike Tennant of Tavcom. And naturally people to do with the institute such as chair Emma Shaw; and Nick Hymans, the head of security services EMEA at Credit Suisse, who was one of our banking sector diners at our last editor’s lunch, featured last issue. And some powerful stuff from speakers, such as Michael Barley, Director of Group Security at Sky, on the death of a presenter, killed while reporting from Cairo in 2013.

Launch
Dallmeier held a new product launch of their new range of multi sensor cameras on floor 39 of Canary Wharf. The company that has had a massive success with the Panomera camera was now launching a range of multi-sensor cameras which they say are competitively priced against single sensor multi-pixel cameras. They handed out a calculator (pictured) so that you can work out for yourself which one in the range will cover your need; I suggest you ask them for one of these. To be fair the demonstration was very impressive so if you have not had the chance to see it for yourself, ask for a demo; you won’t be disappointed I am sure.

Joint fund-raising event
A number of the security associations held their first charity fund-raising event in London, and raised £16,000 for PTSD Resolution, and the St Giles Trust. Pictured is Garry Evanson, the security director at the Palace of Westminster and the deputy chairman of the Security Institute. Did you know that he is also a classical singer? Those at the dinner now do. He entertained us with a few Andrew Lloyd-Webber songs and Nessun Dorma. Less musical but as interesting was Lord Carlile of Berriew QC CBE who spoke after dinner having just rushed to the event after speaking on Sky news.

Consec
The annual Association of Security Consultants’ exhibition and conference was held once again at the Marriott Hotel near Heathrow. There were some great speakers as those attending said to me during the breaks, and it was supported with 22 exhibitors.

WiS awards
After Consec the ASC put on a special dinner to allow us to present this years Women in Security (WiS) awards. Met Police Deputy Commissioner Cressida Dick spoke about women in policing and Una Riley and I then presented the awards. If you are reading this magazine backwards, you can read all about that on Una’s column on page 26.

Essen
You may know that Security Essen is held every other year, so this was a year for the show . It is impressive taking up some 12 halls of Messe Essen. One thing that surprises me is the size of the exhibition stands, it is difficult to say who had the biggest but there were quite a few contenders. My only criticism about the show is that it is very German. Not being able to talk the language makes it difficult to communicate, unless you’re talking to an English person, which by the way most stands had; in fact you will always be bumping into someone from the UK that you know. It seems that most of us Brits in the industry travel over to the event.
