Manchester work

by Mark Rowe

City Street which runs around Manchester on evenings seeks to engage young people from some deprived areas of the city into activity. An aim is to give them volunteering opportunities with a view to get them back into education, training or employment.

Organisers report that they have seen a drop in anti-social behaviour due to some of the other night time provisions around the city. The two sessions are in Wythenshawe and Gorton; the Wythenshawe project is funded by a private sponsor and Greater Manchester Police (GMP). This project has been running for nearly two years and includes football and a female-specific self-defence class run with US Girls Alive.

The new Gorton project is funded by contract event security company Showsec which provide match day stewards at the Etihad Stadium. The Gorton project is the same set up as Wythenshawe with the football session on Astro-turf and the female self-defence in the inside hall. CITC would like to thank Showsec for their support.
