IP for metal refinery

by Mark Rowe

The Maidstone, Kent-based installers Secure Engineering report an upgrade to the electronic security system at a large metal refinery in Essex.

The refinery specialises in several complex metal processes, including injection and compression moulding parts for industrial use, tools, mobile phones, and the medical and automobile industries. The valuable metals involved in these processes make it vital to ensure that the refinery has CCTV coverage at all times.

The site initially had a long standing CCTV installation of around 35 cameras. The requirement was for a complete security control room modernisation, and the installation of new CCTV and perimeter intrusion detection.

Secure Engineering says that it worked closely with the customer to design and install an IP installation that enables coverage of the site perimeter, as well as safety and security monitoring of the internal site and buildings. The system has a mix of 98 high definition (HD) cameras, including PTZ and static cameras with infra-red capabilities, with 44 cameras dedicated to video motion detection around the site perimeter. The new system used Samsung IP cameras, NVR servers and security analytics monitoring software.

The live images are viewed 24 hours, in several locations on site, as well as recording to more than 72 terabytes of Raid-protected storage, across three enterprise-grade network recorders. Infrared lighting around the site ensures that it remains secure in low light, whilst minimising light pollution.

Secure Engineering says that it faced a challenging deadline to complete the upgrades to the control room, and get critical parts of the system working before the Christmas 2014 break. Two teams of engineers initially worked on site, with a dedicated project manager on site three days a week to co-ordinate the progress. The final stage of the project was completed in late March.
