Fire truck cameras

by Mark Rowe

A case study of Istanbul Fire Brigade: with 113 fire stations spread across the European and Anatolian sides of the city.

There is probably no tougher test for an IP surveillance camera than to be mounted to the outside of a fire truck, driven across a major metropolis at high speeds in extreme heat or in rain and sleet, and still be expected to provide crystal clear video, but this is what the Istanbul Fire Brigade demanded. They needed video surveillance to protect the public of Istanbul, as well as the firemen of the brigade and their state-of-the-art equipment. The brigade’s fire trucks required high quality video monitoring at both the front and rear, as well the capacity to provide two-way audio functionality. They also required wide-angle coverage to scan the surroundings for hazards. To make the challenge even tougher, the cameras also needed to be absolutely vandal proof and withstand the rough and high-speed journey through the streets of Istanbul. Viewing on this tough challenge, the management of Istanbul Fire Brigade recruited system integrators Ishbak to help them find a better, and more robust solution.

VIVOTEK produces a range of IP cameras and often will work with system integrators to find a number of cameras to match the requirements of the end user, but in this case VIVOTEK had one single camera that was built for job. The VIVOTEK MD7560 Fixed Dome Network Camera is custom designed and manufactured to provide the highest quality video and audio surveillance while sitting encased in a vandal-proof shell that protects it from the roughest treatment and the most extreme weather.

A total of 500 MD7560 Fixed Dome Network Cameras were mounted on both the front and rear of the fire engines of the Istanbul Fire Brigade. The compact 2 mega-pixel camera is equipped with a wide-angle fixed lens, producing broad coverage of the busy streets and buildings of Istanbul. By utilizing high definition 1600×1200 resolution, the MD7560 can deliver clear and detailed images. This means that while attending to a fire, if any event takes place that needs to be analyzed later, the footage can be used as forensic evidence. To add to this, the MD7560 can provide crystal clear two-way audio, enabling rapid communication between members of the fire crew in situations when every second counts.

But what really set the MD7560 apart from its competitors and made it the perfect camera for the Istanbul Fire Brigade was its ability to deal with the most extreme operating conditions. With full EN50155 compliance and IP67-rated design, the MD7560 can withstand shock, vibration, humidity, dust, and temperature fluctuations, maintaining stable and reliable video during even the most jarring vehicle movement. Furthermore, the vandal-proof metal housing delivers robust protection from vandalism.
