DVR supplement

by Mark Rowe

Free with the latest, March 2015 print issue of Professional Security magazine is our annual digital and network recorder supplement. As for many years, this spring publication brings together what’s new in digital video recorders (DVRs) and network video recorders (NVRs).

We’ve covered fully the recent debate on the worth of CCTV, after BBC radio interviews recently by the Surveillance Camera Commissioner, Tony Porter. We make the point that while the mainstream media picked up the argument – and either claimed that CCTV is too powerful for the good of society, or that it’s not powerful enough and is a waste of money – they overlooked that cameras (the public-facing part of a camera system) are only as useful as the quality and length of recording, so that incidents can be interrogated and used as evidence. We also feature comment from BSIA chairman Pauline Norstrom, and installers. And we go through the Surveillance Camera Commissioner’s code of practice, brought out last year, to see what it has to say about proper and proportionate recording of CCTV.

As in previous years, the supplement is our chance to update you on the field, in more detail than we can in the monthly magazine. We bring you various case studies of DVRs and NVRs in use at home and abroad; and company profiles. See also in the main March print issue for case studies of a new IP (Internet Protocol) CCTV system in use for crowd safety and crime prevention and detection at Turf Moor, the home of Premier League football club Burnley; and a Tyco system at Uniphar, the Irish pharmaceutical distribution company based in Dublin, which uses its CCTV to show compliance, besides assuring site security and safety.
