Crime in rural areas

by Mark Rowe

With funding from Nottinghamshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Nottinghamshire police and Nottinghamshire’s Crimestoppers Committee have signed up to become part of the National Rural Crime Network. Already endorsed by 18 of the UK’s Police and Crime Commissioners the network will help by giving farmers, businesses and residents tools to help prevent crime in rural communities.

This will include free property-marking materials, such as CRE Mark which allows them to mark valuable possessions in a visible manner that will deter thieves and deterrent signage and stickers for those who have heating oil tank at their premises to protect their property.

To find out more about the launch of the network and how it affect your rural community, sign up to the Nottinghamshire Police Neighbourhood Alert and Crime Prevention Guides.

PCC Paddy Tipping said: “This fits with my focus on tackling rural crime, including the launch of a rural alert system providing time information to farmers and landowners and the introduction of rural special constables. I heard about this national initiative last year and was keen to get involved as I am confident that by working with others, learning others’ successes as well as our own we will effectively address the type of problems which impact on rural communities.”

Samantha Hancock, Pre-Crime Manager at Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Investing in a few simple measures such as property-marking material like CRE Mark, or deterrent signage can make thieves think twice.

“We are working hard to protect people, their homes and businesses but we do need everyone to think about their own security. If you have an alarm, then set it when you leave. Ensure that your valuables are marked, and register your possessions free of charge on www.immobilise.com. Anyone seeking Crime Prevention advice should make use of our online guides or contact Pre Crime on 101.”

Crimestoppers’ Nottinghamshire Committee Chairman, Bruce Cameron added: “Crimestoppers fully support this campaign and encourage any information which could help the rural community. Crimestoppers is an independent charity. We take the calls then pass them directly to the Police. Crimestoppers will not ask for your name and you won’t need to go to Court.”
