Coast to coast for charity

by Mark Rowe

A run, cycle and kayak across Scotland has raised more than £5,000 for Combat Stress, the charity that specialises in the treatment and support of British armed forces veterans who have mental health problems.

Scott Gough, UniTrust Protection Services (UK) Ltd’s Operations Manager competed in the Challenger Scotland Coast to Coast Endurance event with David Ridley in September 2013. Scott and UniTrust raised donations.

The pair ran, cycled and kayaked over 105 miles of rugged terrain from the North Sea to Scotland’s west coast. They came a creditable 123 out of 486 contestants and achieved their goal of placing in the top quarter of the competition. Scott said: “I must admit this was the toughest physical challenge of my life but it was all worthwhile when we see that over £5,000 has been raised for this excellent cause.”

Scott and David visited one of Combat Stress’ treatment centres in Surrey before the event. They were able to see and learn about all the work to help restore peace to the minds of ex-Service men and women. They saw the grounds, the occupational therapy areas and the clinical treatment rooms where the organisers hold group therapies including one on one sessions. Combat Stress also provide residential treatment for the more serious debilitating conditions such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), severe depression or anxiety disorders as well as community outreach staff and a 24-hour helpline.
