Bravery award nominations wanted

by Mark Rowe

As featured each autumn in Professional Security Magazine, the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals’ Sheriffs’ Award for Bravery is presented each year by the Sheriffs of the City of London.

It goes to an individual, or individuals, who have shown commendable and selfless courage in the course of protecting another person or their property. The Company is seeking nominations for the 2014 Award.

Nominations are sought nationally from the public, the emergency services and the armed forces. The winner of the award is presented with a trophy, framed certificate and cheque for £2500; the winner’s name is also permanently inscribed on the Honours Board and in the Book of Honour, which are on display at the Central Criminal Court – the Old Bailey.

The 2014 Award will be presented by the Sheriffs of the City of London at the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals’ Annual Dinner, at Merchant Taylors’ Hall on Monday, October 13.

With a nomination form, further details of the award can be found on the homepage of the Company website – www.wcosp.com.

About 2013 award

Pictured is Tom Temple, given the 2013 award at the annual dinner of the Worshipful Company on October 7. The dinner at Merchant Taylors’ Hall in the City of London was attended by some 200 guests, and dignitaries, notably: Lord Imbert CVO QPM DL QPM JP; Alderman and Sheriff Sir Paul Judge; Sheriff Adrian Waddingham CBE; Prof Paul Jarrett FRCS the Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers; Colonel David Neal, Royal Military Police and Lieutenant Colonel Sue Pillar, Intelligence Corps.

In November 2012, Tom Temple, a logistics consultant, reacted to a life threatening situation without regard for his own personal safety. Tom will probably argue that he was just doing his civic duty, when he decided to apprehend an individual who threatened a taxi driver with a hand gun. Not only did Tom, who was with his wife at the time, pin the criminal to the ground until police arrived, he prevented a number of bystanders from picking up the hand gun, which was now on the road, and controlled an initially hostile crowd who thought that he was apprehending an innocent civilian. His actions kept people safe, preserved the crime scene and resulted in the criminal receiving a two and a half year prison term.
