Blood identity

by Mark Rowe

NHS Blood and Transplant is using an identity security product, to offer what the blood donation arm of the NHS terms an online donor experience to encourage the young to give blood.

NHS Blood and Transplant decided on Ping Identity’s PingFederate product, for donors to use their Facebook or Twitter log-in details to gain secure access to its website and be kept up to date.

PingFederate allows donors and those interested in donating to securely use their social media log-in details to gain access to the NHS Blood and Transplant website where they can register, book an appointment, find a convenient donation session or view their recent donation history. The single sign-on platform has meant:

· Donors are reminded of their appointments via in-app tweets or Facebook messages

· Donors can publicise the fact they are giving blood via their social media platforms, amplifying the important ‘give blood’ message

· Donors are using a platform that is engaging, seamless and secure

PingFederate provides the secure platform behind this initiative, ensuring identities and passwords stay where they belong while ensuring that users have access to the information they need. PingFederate ensures that the NHS Blood and Transplant has centralised control over donors’ identities and authentication, allowing them to monitor and audit usage for governance and compliance.

“We live in a digital age, where people want to access information seamlessly, securely and in a way that suits them,” said Jon Latham, Assistant Director for Marketing and Donor Contact Service at NHS Blood and Transplant. “By working with Ping Identity and engaging with our donors on a social level, we’re able to simplify the way they can make an appointment to donate. This has helped to promote our message that each blood donation can save three lives and has had a real impact on the number of online bookings we receive.”

“Security and convenience can go hand in hand – there doesn’t have to be a trade-off between the two,” said Jason Goode, Managing Director – EMEA at Ping Identity. “Working closely with NHS Blood and Transplant we’ve been able to provide the organisation with a secure platform to federate account information and personal data – leading to more engagement with donors, and importantly raising awareness of their cause.”
