Monitored security of the gallery at Abbot Hall near Kendal is protecting artwork on permanent display as well as visiting exhibitions. The service is by Chubb Fire & Security Ltd, a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

Abbot Hall is a Grade I listed building in the Lake District, originally built in 1759, that opened as an art gallery in 1962. Nick Rogers, curator for Lakeland Arts, the organisation that manages Abbot Hall, said: “Chubb has proven very helpful and sensitive to the environment, particularly given the difficulties of working within a listed building. Much of the installation work was conducted out of hours causing minimum disruption to visitors and staff.”

As a Grade I listed building, defined as a building of exceptional historic interest by Historic England, the security contractor had to ensure that any work was in keeping with the fabric of the building. Hence precautions to prevent any damage to the premises.

Rogers added: “The new installation builds upon an already extensive relationship we have with Chubb, which has proven to be a successful security contractor. We can be a demanding client, but Chubb manages this well and works around us, rather than us working around them.”
