ANPR for data centre HQ

by Mark Rowe

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) was recently installed at the headquarters of Everest Data Centres, in Reading.

With clients ranging from SMEs requiring a single rack hosted, to larger corporates requiring dedicated data halls to their specification, Everest
provides the site for clients to host their mission-critical equipment and servers. The firm holds the Information Security Management standard ISO 27001.

A high definition ANPR system from RoadPixel, the ANPR hardware and software company, was installed to integrate with new bi-fold electronic gates. RPX-LIVE, RoadPixel’s security and access control application, pictured, opens the gates for authorised users and visitors and records full event data and images for traffic including any vehicles such as delivery trucks allowed access manually. Vehicles entering and exiting the site are logged as searchable event records with monochrome and colour images integrated to an SQL database. SQL-based event logfiles can be serached by full or partial plate and time and date range providing a list of results with event details and associated images. Multiple user groups can be created within RPX-LIVE’s database to ensure that only authorised vehicles are granted access to the site for set time ranges. The product’s ANPR processor sits in a central admin office where staff can update the authorised database, for instance with temporary visitor permits.

A ‘hot list’ or ‘alert’ can highlight a vehicle plate. Notifications can be sent by email to staff. Even unknown vehicles passing on the perimeter road can create an alert if seen above a set frequency.

Ed Butler, Managing Director says: “As a high security site we required a system that was secure and reliable 24-7, the ANPR system is proving just that with the user interface surprisingly easy to use.”
