Olympic, Ashes fence patent

by Mark Rowe

The fencing manufacturer Zaun reports that it has a patent from the Intellectual Property Office for its temporary security MultiFence assembly.

Zaun created the mobile HVAC (Hostile Vehicle Mitigation) fencing for London 2012 by mounting its PAS 68 MultiFence into Multibloc concrete blocks to resist attack by 7.5 tonne vehicles driven straight at it at 40mph. The makres say that the mounting of the fencing on the blocks means that space is saved over using separate roadblocks and temporary fencing.

London 2012 organisers wanted to protect temporary Olympic venues, like the main Stratford site, but they needed the perimeter protection to be removed after the Games were over to minimise disruption locally.

They hoped to include vehicle and pedestrian access, with CCTV and detection systems. They also planned to tailor protection to each location and the security threat and attack potential identified by advisers. The product has since been used at Emirates Old Trafford for the third Investec 2013 England-Australia Test.

The temporary event overlay – to keep the aesthetics of the ground – meant the MultiFence system was branded with event and advertising messages as part of a £40m redevelopment.

The makers add that their MultiFence assembly is one of the first to achieve PAS 68:2010 V7500(N2) 64/90:5.0/0.0, the latest of BSi’s Publicly Available Specifications for vehicle security barriers and the benchmark for hostile vehicle mitigation. It is made to comply with the quality standards of BS EN 1317 (vehicle restraint systems) and to secure approval for use by the Highways Agency. It uses anti-climb mesh fencing with posts mounted in concrete blocks using a bolting method which allows the panels to follow a curve or go from a flat surface to an incline with ease.

The system is said to be for for uses such as utility plants, as no below-ground foundations are required and can be used on soft and hard standing. It gives protection up to 5m in height. The company has also developed above ground pedestrian and vehicle gates, turnstiles and access portals, with CCTV columns and PID (passive infra-red) systems.

Zaun also makes ArmaWeave; this is already used at a number of high-profile maximum-security installations across the UK and has achieved Secured by Design accreditation, the official UK Police flagship initiative supporting the principles of ‘designing out crime’.
