MEMBER’S HANDBOOK 2  ASC V1.0 May 2013

ASC MEMBERSHIP

The Association of Security Consultants has expanded consistently since its creation in 1991. Sound, independent and professional advice is the core ideal of the ASC. Based in the UK, the ASC is the international professional association for independent security consultants.

In representing and promoting their specific interests, the ASC aims:

 to maintain the highest professional and business standards amongst its members and in the industry,

 to stay in the forefront of security methods, technology and applications,

 to contribute actively to the development and formulation of national and international standards, policy and practice in security,

 to promote excellence in relations with clients, security manufacturers and installers.

Members are independent security consultants or work for independent consultancies. All are leading experts in their field, and have no allegiance to specific suppliers of goods or services.

Collectively their expertise and experience covers every facet of security in all sectors of government, commerce and industry.

In engaging members of the ASC, clients can be assured of unbiased and independent advice providing cost effective solutions to security requirements proportional to risks.

SECURITY AND THE ASC

Providing effective security today has never been more challenging – at all levels – and the availability of independent advice, never more important. The threats are increasingly more diverse and complex in their execution, creating a continuing challenge to the Security Industry. This has lead to the creation by the authorities of a plethora of regulations and standards in an attempt to manage performance of the Security Industry, in meeting the expectations of clients. The ASC as an organisation is determined that it’s members provide the highest level of professional and independent advice, based on experience and expert knowledge, to provide cost-effective and appropriate solutions meeting the practical demands of the client and the perceived threats.

WHAT IS AN INDEPENDENT SECURITY CONSULTANT?

Covering such a very wide spectrum of disciplines, security as a concept can mean different things to each individual. A simple definition of a ‘security consultant’ has often proved elusive. Here is the ASC understanding…

‘A security consultant is a person who, by training, education and experience, is skilled in the principles and practice of security and who provides security services and expertise to third parties, independently of other goods and services.’

ASC members are independent security consultants who maintain individual skills in a designated range of disciplines, covering highly specialised expertise and ‘state-of-the-art’ technology. They can also work collaboratively with other ASC members to provide an extensive offering of capabilities across the breadth of security requirements and solutions.

A PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION

The ASC is a not-for-profit organisation. Since its formation in 1991 the ASC has become recognised as one of the most respected professional organisations in the security industry. With strong connections in government, commerce and industry the ASC has links with a variety of organisations for the benefit of members, clients and partners.

The ASC also recognises that many engaged in a corporate environment also fulfil an internal consultancy role and as such, are eligible to apply for Associate Membership of the ASC as detailed below.

The ‘Association of Security Consultants’ and ‘ASC’ are collective marks. A collective mark is a specific type of trade mark which indicates that the 5  ASC V1.0 May 2013 goods or services bearing the mark originate from members of a trade association. A condition of that registration is that members of the ASC must be listed in our publicly available register. ASC full-members are registered independent security consultants (RISC) subject to regulation.

STRUCTURE

The operation of the ASC is managed by an elected Board of 10 members who serve as Directors. The structure of the organisation comprises a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer and Company Secretary, with other Directors serving in various capacities such as officers of the Membership Committee, the Events Committee, CPD, Standards, Business Group Committee, Imbert Awards and CONSEC conference organisers.

Administration is managed by the ASC Secretariat under direction of the Secretary, who is also responsible for the Company Agenda, Minutes and Compliance. ASC Members are encouraged to support the Directors in all activities and initiatives.

The Board of Directors establishes sub-committees to investigate or manage special business interests, as and when required.
